So, there I was....

So there I was, hurtling down US 74 W at 65 mph. Cruise control on as the road is a straight as an arrow and not too busy.

And I had stopped at the start of US 74 W in order to get a cup of McDonald's most excellent plain coffee. (I do not like flavored coffees at all). I had the medium cup of coffee and as I said, I was hurtling down the highway when I again lifted the cup to my lips for a sip and lo! I inhaled it instead. Oh, there is not a lot quite as horrible while traveling down the road as the act of inhaling a liquid into your windpipe and consequently, choking horribly.

Tears pouring out of my eyes half blinding me, I take the cruise control off and slow to as slow a speed as I could in as short a time period as possible. I tried to find any decent widening to pull off to finish coughing my entire insides up and then to gasp for breath.

No such luck and just trying to get air into my lungs was some serious work. Finally I got some trickles of air through my gaping maw into my coffeed lungs..that was as sweet a relief as I have experienced in my life. Still couldn't pull over so I crept on down the highway little knowing (or seeing) what passing vehicles passengers saw or thought.

I continued to cough up coffee for quite a few miles and then I was clearing my throat almost constantly. But I could breath. Man, I hate it when that happens. I was very careful with the rest of the coffee.

That above in the header is a picture taken of part of the skyline of the City of Charlotte NC (in my header). I took it last October on a walking tour. Those are ALL banks..no apartments. Charlotte is the U.S.'s second largest banking City, second to NYC. It is a beautiful City and I never ever tore of looking at it and enjoying all of its many many features and its beauty. Here is another photo I took walking downtown of my Bank, the Bank Of America's Corporate building. Tallest building there and it is beautifully reflected in another one.

  1. Carole I am sure glad you are okay, and didn't burn yourself, as I know how hot McDonald's coffee can be. That would be scary, especially when there is no place to pull over.
I haven't done that while driving, but I have got sick to my stomach while driving the 401, and luckily been able to slow down and get off to the side. I was very fortunate.

Love your photograph of the building and it's reflection in the other building, as well as your header. Great eye my friend. You and your camera make quite the team.
Take care and have a most wonderful week.
    xo Dianne :)

  2. Thank heaven you are OK! I have inhaled from a cup of tea before while I was sitting down. I thought I would choke to death before I got it all cleared out. I can imagine how frightened you were while driving.
The header photo is beautiful! Rae has visited there and I would love to some day.

I have now developed a sore throat. I am looking forward to seeing the doctor instead of usually dreading it. LOL!!

I am glad you are back. you were missed!

  4. Wow, scary stuff about the coffee. What would Miss Admiral have done if it hadn't worked out ok in the end. My hubby is a big one for drinking coffee while driving: I will recount your story to him.

  5. I am so sorry that happened to you. It is so painful and such a relief for even a bubble of air! Thank goodness you survived without accident. There should be shoulders you'd think for emergency pull overs. BIG buildings!

  7. Oh man - talk about scary. M has had choking fits like that - just last week. She finally went in gasping to Dad who hit her on the back to divert her attention from the problem. It's even worse when it happens to you driving - you could have been in a serious accident. So glad you are okay. I don't quite understand how it happens anyway. Is it that we inhale while dirnking, or drink too fast? I'd sure like to know what cuases it so try to avoid doing it ever again.

  8. That sort things a choke to made me coughing
when I used the air condition or heating systems
in the car and even just opened the refrigerate
    too.

  9. Gees, we're glad you were okay...Pretty dangerous to be trying to drink coffee and then choking while on the highway! Scary!

Years ago, during one of the holiday highway police blitzes, they pulled someone over on the 401 -- he had a crock pot going beside him. How freaking stupid was that????

  12. See that's what happens when you drink plain 'ol coffee! Just kidding of course! I hate the whole process of lungs clearing themselves out of something you've choked on...yuck! I love the picture you took there! I say it was epic!
