Jumped the Gun

I suppose I jumped the gun with my last sentence yesterday regarding the horrible filthy website I thought was attached to my site here.  I spoke with one of my sons who is a Software Engineer  and he has explained what it was that I saw (filthy but not "attached" as it were to my site)  He said most blogs unfortunately are visited by these trolls and filth makers.  There is nothing I can do about it unless I just quit.  No need to do that, delete the blog,  because of them as they aren't doing what my panicky thoughts said they were.  So, never mind.

Well, it's football time this Saturday.  College football that is and that is the only football I watch.  One of the boys will be over and he expects me to get some pizza  to munch while the game is on so that will happen.  I'll get it tomorrow. I only hope that our still new Coach can get something out of the team.  We have had the worst losing season in all our history these past two years, particularly last year.  It was until three years ago a proud and excellent SEC University football team.  The new Coach has been desperately trying to rebuild from nothing.  This may be his last year if we don't win some games.  It's up to the individual players as these things always are.  One thing though, our kicker could be replaced by Katie Isabella and we'd do better.  I may need to email the coach.  I just don't see how anyone could miss-kick so many balls, miss so many field goals and have so many of his kicks blocked.  We ought to bring in (kidding) a good HS football kicker/punter.  100 times better than the one we have.

Just wanted to say that I am back on even keel regarding the filth I saw yesterday in the stats  No comments from them..just they were here.  Sent me off the deep end.  They were on the cats' blogs stats too.

Fix-'em-Up Tuesday

Well, I had a general handy man over.  I rented a husband in a way.  He pulled the dryer out from the wall (there is no other placement in the house for this dryer) and lined it up properly with the venting hole in the wall.  It needed tweaking which the installer didn't do.  Sigh.  So now everything fits; and he plugged up a hole where the dryer plugged into the outlet  and that itself may be where the mice were coming in last fall and winter and also where that cold breeze was coming from that I could feel on my feet when it was winter time.  I hope to goodness this will stop the mice and Katie capturing them and bringing them to the bed!  That's a jolt, trust me.

Now I have discovered it's damp under the house...sigh...and I contacted someone to come and see about a moisture barrier and to see what to do with the vents if that is needed. $$$.  Glad I closed an account at the credit union a few weeks ago.  It may help cover these unexpected expenses.

Meanwhile still hot..still humid but then, this is still August.

I found a place that can sell me the out of print book I want and there is a sequel to it.  I will buy that too.  There was a movie made from that book as well and that was 1924.  If anyone else wants to look one up, I used Bookfinder.com

I have just finished my lunch  (and logged it) of a sandwich of tuna salad with TWO stalks of celery in it because I love celery so much.  I measured the lite  mayo for the first time ever. I put pickle relish in mine.  Nummy.

Off to read the paper.  With the handy man here and then going to the grocery store I haven't looked at the papers yet and I know someone small will want to be on my lap for snuggle time.  She was mashed up into my back and later my tummy last night.  Keeps you on the edge of the mattress but oh well.  Here she is, all flattened out and her eyes almost closed.

When Will it Moderate?

Hot hot hot.  Humid too.  I sure hope we get some sort of winter and fall this year as last winter as I already have mentioned was the warmest in the 48 contiguous States ever.  EVER.

I haven't been out quite as much---well, half as much to tell the truth, as I always was to take photos as it is just so grindingly beastly hot and humid.  Now it's too late for many of the things I was looking forward to. It will have to be landscapes pretty much from now on I suppose.

I have started logging food again.  It always does a pretty good job in assisting me to know what and how much I am eating.  That's just another way to say that logging causes me to be accountable and so it keeps me from mindlessly eating.  Darn good thing I work out every other day.

Looking for an old old book I had since I was a kid and it was old old THEN for pity sakes.  I remember the title (I think it was written in the 20's) but not the author.  I want to see if I can buy it in some out of print books in-line place.  It was fascinating and like a glance through a time tunnel as to what life was like for a beautiful young girl during those times. What families and men in general were like, attitudes and social mores.  I have it somewhere but it's ragged and missing some pages.  So, looking for another.

Hope everyone is alright.  I went through some of the dashboard to see who had blogged.  Many times it's Katie Isabella who comes to your blogs and sometimes I go to HER furriends.  It's a question of not logging out.  Drat having so many accounts and passwords.

I'm having a problem with FB ever since it upgraded me.  Comments I make don't show up until later..pictures won't take till later maybe.  Anyone else with that problem?

September is Coming, Oh Noes!

Here is my Stapelia in full bloom last year.  The star shaped flowers are the open ones.  The ball shaped ones are those yet to open.  I dread that happening each year.  Why?  Because it always blooms toward the end of September and the stench of the blossoms is legion!  OH how it stinks.  It smells like carrion and attracts flies so as to be pollinated.  I have seen the blossoms covered with flies the second they appear and they stay that way till the fall off.  Now this is when they are outside.  You may be wondering what my problem is.

I can't leave the plant outside past the end of September because the nights are too cold and it may die.  So I bring it along with the other few plants who Summer outside into the house for the Fall and Winter.  That means that horrible stench comes in with the plant.  The stink is into all of the rooms within a day.

One year I thought to outsmart the plant.  I broke off only the blossoms right where they attached and brought in the plant which promptly started to die.  I was horrified as this is all I have of my mother from when she died a long time ago. (She was relatively young..barely out of her 40's). So I call this "mother's cactus".  I was able to get ahold of an expert on-line and asked what to do.  He told me all I could do was root the "arms" properly and hope for the best.  So, I got a pot, some succulent mixture and laid the arms of the plant sideways in the soil, watered, and hoped.  Now I have a back-up plant..still small.  Apparently this thing grows slowly when it starts.  My "mother" plant survived after losing most of its arms and legs hanging down.  It started anew from a few inches left sticking up and now it's healthy.

BUT: I am going to have to see and smell it bloom again this year.  The smell is horrible.  I'm not kidding.  But it's mother's and all I have of her.

Happy Birthday to my Youngest Boy Today

Happy Birthday dearest son.  One of three dearest sons to be sure but today is your birthday and as always I must say to anyone who will listen and read how happy and blessed I am to have you as my son.

As I have said hundreds of times before, there is no greater gift from God than a child of your own.  As far as I am  and was concerned, that topped ANYTHING else ever that I could be gifted with here on the earth.

Your unique qualities make you just exactly that, unique...never mundane,  a Neil Original.  There is none other like you and I hit the jackpot when I had you and your brothers.  Each of you have your own gifts and each of you know what it's like to be cherished, wanted and loved.  Even if Ma had to let loose, that doesn't mean I can't love you.

Happy Birthday.  Be joyous.

Times a while....Adventures of Robin Tortie

Here is the youngest son with Robin, an extraordinary lady cat who helped me rear all three sons.  She lasted just a couple months shy of sixteen years so she was the biggest part of their training and rearing.  They all grew up to be excellent cat servants.

You can see the sheets and cloths spread around on the furniture absorbing our beautiful tiny 6 pound Mighty Tortie Girl's beautiful furs.  That was my son's first laptop I think...and everything you see is long gone including that hideous carpet.

Robin was one of our most beloved of cats ever.  Oh, since she flew away I have deeply loved two more girls..Admiral aka Miss Catt aka Hester, and Kathryn Isabella who is presently with me here at home.  But the boys loved Robin like no other.  She deserved it with all the hard work she put in with them as well as nursing each one as he became sick with childhood illnesses.  She even got sick once with one of their illnesses while tending to them.  That was when she nursed the middle son back to health.  Poor girl fell ill for awhile.

She brought LOTS..and I mean LOTS of dead and still alive prey in for us both night and day as she was an indoor outdoor (in at night) girl.  Mice of course, snakes,  moles, lizards, frogs, rabbits, chipmunks, squirrels, birds, insects and assorted other prey.  And yes, we praised her despite her letting loose of still lively mice in the house --where we never were able to get them out except they died in a closet.  Oh, the reek!

She used to go to the cabinet where she knew her paper plates were and paw it open and knock down her plates when she wanted to eat.  Then,  and I invite lightening to strike me right now if it isn't true..she went to the cabinet where her Fancy Feast was and pawed down a can with an awful clatter on the counter. Can't ignore THAT.

When she was first diagnosed with kidney disease at 14 years of age, the Vet gave us sample bags of KD food.  She hated it with a passion.  Here is how we knew aside from her refusing to eat it..she took a sample bag, carried it to her litter box and buried it.  No kidding.  I came home from work and went to feed her from the bag I'd left on the counter..it was gone.  I had to feed her something else.  When I cleaned her box, there was the pouch of KD food.  I called the Vet from work the next morning and he and the Staff just roared.  Robin was a smart girl.  A cat among cats.  I have many more stories but I know you're way past bored with this one.

Am I the only one who is deeply concerned about this?  Snopes,  from whom this URL came, said "mixture" but read it all.  Every word.  It is happening.  They're just in the process of refining it, is what *I* gather.  I want very much to be wrong.

Good? I reckon!

Oh--- that chicken dinner was sooooo good.  Now, you'll have to like onion and bell pepper for this to succeed for you.

My son is taking home the leftovers.  He purposefully just had one serving as did I- so there is plenty left for him to take home this morning.  I put his in a  plastic storage container box and I saved one portion for my supper tonight. Um um GOOD!

2 teaspoons paprika
1 teaspoon minced garlic..I used dried.
1 teaspoon thyme leaves
1/4 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper
1/2 (or to taste) teaspoon crushed red pepper

1/4 cup flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts cut into 6 serving size pieces.
2 Tablespoons olive oil.
1 large green or red bell pepper cut into strips.
1 large onion, cut into 1/2" thick wedges.
1 14 1/2 oz. can diced tomatoes, undrained.
1/2 cup chicken broth.

Mix flour, salt and all of the spices except the red pepper flakes in a small bowl.  Sprinkle chicken with 2 tablespoons of this flour/spice mixture.

Cook chicken in hot oil in a large skillet high heat, 3 min. per side and remove chicken from skillet.

Add bell pepper and onion to skillet and cook 5 or so minutes till tender.

Then stir in tomatoes, broth and remaining seasoned flour and bring to a boil.  Stir in red crushed hot pepper flakes now.  Adjust to taste or you may just leave it out altogether.

Return chicken to the skillet, reduce heat to low and simmer till chicken is cooked through.  I check mine with a meat thermometer.

It is not near the work it looks like here.  Try it.

Chicken tonight!!

I am almost finished cooking the so-called Spanish chicken for tonight's supper when the oldest is here.
The addition of the crushed red pepper...Oooo so GOOD! It's simmering and I should go check the meat thermometer and see if it's done.  Scuse me..be right back.  Not quite ready yet although I think I may take one of the breasts out and cut it to see if there is any pink left.

This is a new recipe for me so I hope that it's enjoyable to my boy as well as to me.  It has made the house smell heavenly.

You know, the value of cooking for oneself is more noticeable these days.  I got about 7 chicken breasts, boneless and skinless on sale for $1.98 a pound.  I took them home, wrapped them up separately for my own use since one is more than enough for me.   I grew the bell pepper, the onions didn't cost too much, the spices were on hand and the diced tomatoes could have been my own but I chose to buy a can of them.  Not much money there.  The chicken broth was cheap.  I bought the house brand.  The flour cost is negligible at 1/4 a cup for this recipe and it was on hand.  By the time all is said and done, I would have had to pay a minimum of $10.99 maybe for this meal if I ordered it in a restaurant.  Since my oldest is here, that would be times two.  So, $22.00 + tip and tax...I saved a bundle by making some effort.

Here it is after the chicken was browned for a few minutes and removed so as to cook the peppers and onion, broth and seasoned flour, diced tomatoes and the hot pepper. Then you add the chicken back in, simmer till tender and cooked thru.  Much longer than the recipe said.  Fifteen minutes is unrealistic for uncooked chicken for pete sake.




That's the shadow of my head there on the stove.  :-)  To myself and son I say this gonna be good stuff.

I think Fall is approaching..

Looks like Fall is not too far away as the Dogwood leaves are starting to edge with crimson and the sun is slanting from a different angle.  I think I recall that the talking heads have stated on several occasion that this was the warmest winter ever in the 48 contiguous States.  Ever. I already have mentioned that my daffodils were up and BLOOMING by January 27th.  That's just not  right.  The TVA, aka Tennessee Valley Authority complained they lost money because the heating season was so short and sparse heating days evenwhen it did chill down some.  They complain when the usage is high..they complain when it's low.  Must be those executives complaining who are getting a few less millions in bonuses at our expense-- meaning rate changes.

Thanks for the comments on the last post.  I like messing with the pictures.  You can't see how ancient I am when I do those layering things.  Smart woman.

I am going to try a new recipe tomorrow when the oldest comes to see me.  It's called Spanish Chicken and it's one of the McCormick spices recipes.  I hope it's good. I'll let you know and tell you so you can try it too.  It wants 1 1/2 lbs chicken breasts, spices, diced tomatoes, onion, julienned red bell pepper among other things.  Oh-- and chicken broth.  I bought the red pepper and broth after working out yesterday so I'm ready.  One browns the chicken first, removes it from the pan and then sautes the onion and red bell pepper, adds the spices, a little flour, the tomatoes, whatever and simmer for a while. There's a bit more to it..I'm just relying on memory too early in the morning.  :-)

Nellie, I have more or less maintained that new-to-me length of hair.  It's shoulder length in front but a bit longer in the back.  I can make a creditable low pony tail.  :-)

I need to get ready, grab the camera and head out.  I wish I could find swans like Dianne does where she lives.  She has the most beautiful pictures of the swan families..babies and parents that I have ever seen.



This is a Magnolia Grandiflora.  HUGE tree and plate sized blossoms many times when they open fully.  I took this up the street.

Time to get cracking and get ready for the day.  I have been in here at the computer helping Katie read her bloggie and making comments.  I need to wash my face and assume my disguise.  XXOO

Over the River and Through the Mountains...

To my middle son's house I go.  That will be Thursday morning.  For the first time since before last October I may get to go to all my "places" I love to go.  Someone needs to be in charge of spending.  That place is wonderful for shopping.  At the highest end to the lowest, it's all there.  LOVE it.  I have come home with the trunk bursting with "stuff" almost every time.

Soon as I do this I have to go buy another tote bag.  I never thought I would see the day but mine are all in use holding books.  SO..I need another to carry a change of clothes and jammies in.

If it would only stop being so humid out there.  It rains buckets every day after about 5 weeks of NO rain at all...enough to mess up crops, and now..rain every day and humidity over the top.  You get in the car and despite the a/c you still get perspiry (no such word, I know) walking to and from the vehicle  and me, my hair is thick especially in the back so I wind up with a quite damp back o' th' head when all is said and done.  I hate that.  If that's the worst thing ever to happen to me (and it hasn't been SO far) I have it made).

You know what I wish I had?  Some fried potatoes and onions.  I won't make them though because I would founder eating them.  Color me exploded!

I have had to pay to have a certified by the State wildlife trapper come out and set traps.  So far, two raccoons and an opossum.  They were on the deck tearing it up and gouging it as well.  Tore up and broke my expensive hummingbird feeder too.  Threw the patio set around and terrorised the cat even though she is always inside.  She sees the hulking things and tries to fight them through the window glass at o'dark early.  Screams and growls from her have me up trying to sooth the situation.  It was worth the money to have someone come out and take care of at least a few.  I see I will always have to bring in the nectar at night until they leave to go back to their homes, the hummers that is.  I hate to bring it in at night because they are fattening up for their trip now...and I have seen them out there drinking in the dark.
