First, here is the finished door and I have a question. Hope you answer sooner than later because the man will be here after awhile today.

I opened the door to show you that there is carpet all the way to the threshold. You can see the rub marks if you look hard enough. I was thinking of asking my man if he is willing to cut all the way across of course, the carpet down to about 6 feet in length what ever the door sweep is, I guess...no idea right now, and put in either tile, if it isn't too thick, or fake wood flooring, what is it, vinyl? What ever it is that is so popular now. (I have it in the bathroom...LOVE it) (Keeping that clean is so easy it ought to be against the law!!) That way the carpet won't look any worse as it won't be there! I'd love slate but that is VERY expensive.
What do you think? Seriously. Hope someone reads and wants to comment. Not many people travel over this way to come see me (and Katie.) If no one feels like saying an opinion, dang it, I'll have to think for myself. Hate it when that happens. I will also ask the man...as he would be the one to do it.
In case you're wondering, I've been saving for repairs etc. So, all is well. It's best to sock away a few shillings to have for a rainy day. Then, if it's not needed...you can give yourself a fab present. Right? Right. Have a dead dead dead tree out back and the guys will, as mentioned before fell it for me. It is tall but it can fall anywhere. It'll just hit other trees equally tall or more.

I am all about "easy" - so I wouldn't have a carpet right at the door anyway - we have wood floors in our foyer and I wish I had a "fake wood/vinyl" in the foyer because it's so dang easy to keep clean vs. carpet or "real" wood. I vote for FAKE wood!!

High traffic area; what wears the best? Ceramic tile or granite, terrazzo are suggestions. Make it go far enough into your home past the door swing, so a person can stand there is wet shoes and push the door closed without being on carpeting. My 2 cents worth.

DeleteI would opt for an easy clean floor - lots of fabulous luxury vinyl options out there, if you go that route.

ReplyDeleteYes, by all means go into the room area far enough. We have the fake vinyl wood at the door and a thin rug that does not interfere with the sweep but catches the dirty shoes. Live the pewter look hardware on the handle and lock.
ReplyDeleteI would definitely make the change. LVP (luxury vinyl plank) is a popular choice, easy maintenance and should be low profile enough for the door to function well.

DeleteI would do as you plan. A nice sweep of flooring - of whatever sort (slate would be very nice) - would look elegant. The alternative is to put a mat or something temporary over the carpet because of mud, snow, dirty water, etc. And no matter what you put there, it always looks out of place to one degree or another.

ReplyDeleteI'm a little late to the post, but I agree the carpet should be removed. I can see how it can get grubby with people in and out the door.
ReplyDeleteBut what you replace it with? I'm a fan of vinyl planking because, as you've mentioned it is relatively easy to keep clean. I've no experienced with tile or slate, but do know that they feel cooler on the foot. I guess it would depend on the thickness of the product.

DeleteI don't know what I would have advised, if I had seen this in time. I don't have much in the way of carpeting myself, just rugs, some larger and some smaller. I am sure that whatever you choose, it will be beautiful and elegant.
